What kind of career is bein a life coach?

Question: I finally found my life calling, and it is to be a Life Coach or Personal Coach. I have no idea what is the best way to study this relatively new field, so I can become one. I see online “schools,” and they’re very expensive. Are they necessary? What is the best route to go overall? Thanks!

” – by ” Ron R

Answer: The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you’ll inevitably have as well as many you haven’t anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Getting Started in Personal and Executive Coaching: How to Create a Thriving Coaching Practice by Stephen G. Fairley, Chris E. Stout

* The Life Coaching Handbook by Curly Martin

* Total Life Coaching: 50+ Life Lessons, Skills, and Techniques to Enhance Your Practice…and Your Life by Patrick Williams

* Coaching Manual: The Definitive Guide to the Process, Principles & Skills of Personal Coaching Paperback by Julie Starr

I also posted links to some free articles in the source box.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Question: I am interested in Counseling. My passion is to help people solve their problems and achieve their dreams.

How can I become a professional Life Coach? Are there certain certifications or degrees that you would recommend?

I am currently looking at obtaining a Neuro Linguistic Programming ( NLP) Practitioner certification.

I would truly appreciate your help.

Answer: Hi.

Depending on the requirements in your country, you may wish to consider a Diploma or Degree in Counselling or Social Work, etc. from a reputable school/institutes to pursue counselling as a career. Couselling works pretty differently form Life Coaching as there is no strict regulation or a national standards on what makes a Life Coach. Having said that, a diploma/degree does gives a good impresssion and credibility to a person if he wants a career in Life Coaching.

As for NLP, the tools which are taught during the training are also useful in Life Coaching as well depending on how you use them.

Cheers!

Question: I had heard of an organization in Southern Calfornia that supports women who have been battered to create completely new lives with a job and home using hair stylists, therapists, coaches, home renovation folks, etc. The particular organization (which I can’t remember the name of) already had a life coach that was providing support for their particular area. I’d like to find another organization in Southern California where I could volunteer my services. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Answer: Life coaching for women who have been battered is a great idea and awesome that you want to volunteer in that capacity! Here’s a (long) list of over 150 agencies that specialize in domestic violence services in California:

Question: I am looking to become a life coach soon. I love helping people. I am creative and idealistic. I have a broad and excellent customer service background and am very good at talking to people. Please help with suggestions. Thank you!

” – by ” Tia C

Answer: I think a great starting point is a personal trainer. That helps people. While working in that field I would look into life coach training. See if your state has any requirements or licenses for that work (check your local community college). If not, you can find plenty of educational opportunities online.

Question: Right now, I study psychology. But I want to be a life coach focusing on stress and time management as well as health. I also want to be a physical trainer. How long will all of this take?

” – by ” Dantaya M

Answer: I’ve been both a Certified Coach and a Certified Personal Trainer and I can tell you this: The days of printing up business cards and just calling yourself a life coach are over. Clients today are more wary than ever of working with unqualified professionals. Reputable coach training programs take about two years to complete. The good news is that they are less expensive than college and you will actually use what you learned in your coaching business. A good personal training certification will take less time. Get both. Most coaches and trainers don’t make much money, but the best ones make a really great living. Be the best.

Question: I realize many of you have preconceived notions about Life Coaches, but I am currently a student studying Mental Health Counseling and would like to make a little extra income on Liveperson, but need the credentials to be a Life Coach before I could become an “expert” since I only have my Bachelor’s in Psychology. Any recommendations? The cheapest I’ve seen is $397.

Answer: I agree with Kend Life Coaching is an awesome career field & for now there is no laws governing coaching. However, I notice that a lot of the schools do honor the ethics of the ICF. The ICF started just like every other institute it is not a government entity. It is like a McDonalds and Burger King…It is just your choice where you decide to be educated. They do not RULE the world of LIFE COACHING. Yes, all schools should have ethics. However, education and training would not work for me for a whole year to learn what I already know,. i would go to a school to be certified to enhance my experiences and build a network of coaches where we can share innovative ideas… I worked with a Life Coach. The experience was great. The person I worked with did not go to an expensive school. I worked with them because they was certified and worked in the community for years “Helping Other’s” we spend a lot of money on music and entertainment. Why Not pay someone their worth because they want you to have a healthier and Happy Life. I checked out the site for the life coach training institute & spencer Institute. After, reviewing it seems that they both will be affordable along with finding the one that is the best fit for you. Life coaching is for healthy motivated individuals. One seems geared toward fitness coaching. The other one seems like it is a family based environment for people who need the face-to-face experience. The choice is always yours? Build a network and make the network for you. Have a wonderful day.

Question: I have a friend with a TON of degrees, along with an impressive resume’. She has done a lot of corporate work in terms of “fixing,” difficult situations within high power companies. So how could she become a personal life coach? Thanks so much.

” – by ” mac

Answer: All she has to do is open a business and call herself a “personal life coach.” Coaching is not a regulated field, so anyone can call themselves a coach and charge whatever they want.

Question: I love giving advice and helping people. I’m thinking of majoring in counseling, but do I even need a degree to become a life coach? If you are one, please tell me if you like your job.

” – by ” Sweets

Answer: Dear Sweets

You are my kindred spirit! I love giving advice and helping people as well.

I see that you are a little confused here.

Counseling is very different from life coaching. Coaching is bringing the best out of people from their existing state. Counseling is looking at their past in order to solve their existing problems.

You don’t need a degree to be a life coach, although most coaches have a degree or higher qualifications of sorts. You can look at the International Coaching Federation website for more information about life coaching (coachfederation.org)

Good luck!

Question: I am considering becoming a life coach on the advice of some friends I helped through a bad spot. The problem is, I’m not sure if one needs to be certified or if the certification programs are scams. Is anyone doing this for a living? What are some good programs to check out? (Yes, I appreciate the humor in asking for advice on life-coaching.)

Not to be rude to those entrepreneurial souls among us, but please don’t link me to some site you’re hawking which will not help me. I’m actually seeking information.

I’ve looked online; that’s where I see the certification courses. I just don’t know how reliable they are.

Answer: Danny Bonaduce on WYSP – 94.1 FM in Philadelphia – has a 15 minute a day Life Coach segment on his radio show – even has his own Theme song with a hard rock beat

very few people probably make a living – you have to be very charismatic, have to put a lot of time and money into having free seminars to convince people you might be able to help them – probably a degree in Psychology or something related would be standard or like Danny B – done everything worng in your life and know how to benefit from that knowledge ad help others

google for information – if there is any – it will be on the internet somewhere
